Encoders are used in the food packaging printing industry

Encoders are primarily used in the food packaging printing industry to achieve high-precision motion control, position detection, and automation of production processes, in order to meet the industry's strict requirements for printing quality, packaging accuracy, and production efficiency. The following are specific application scenarios and.function.analyses.

Application in printing equipment

1. Print registration control: In multicolour printing machines (such as flexographic and gravure printing presses), ensure the accurate alignment of the graphic and text positions of each colour group. Function: Monitor the rotation position and speed of the printing cylinders in real-time through encoders, feeding back to the control system to adjust the phase of the ink rollers or printing plates, avoiding registration deviations (such as misalignment of colour blocks.or.ghosting.of.text).

Example: In label printing machines, the encoder works with the servo motor to synchronise the printing unit's rotation speed with the feed speed of the substrate, ensuring the consistent positioning of the pattern on the label.

2.Print length and tension control: When printing on roll paper, control the repeated length of the printed content (such as the pattern cycle on packaging film).

Function: The encoder detects the feed length of the roll paper, and in conjunction with the tension sensor, real-time adjustments are made to the rotation speed of the unwinding and rewinding motors, maintaining stable tension of the printing material and preventing pattern distortion or paper wrinkling caused by tension fluctuations.

Application in packaging machinery

Bag length and sealing position: the bag making process of vertical and horizontal packaging machines. Function: The encoder is installed on the film feeding roller or traction roller to precisely measure the feed length of the packaging film, control the position of the heat sealing knife, and ensure that the size of each packaging bag is consistent (for example, standardising the specifications of snack bags and instant noodle bags).

Advantages: Compared to mechanical cam control, the combination of encoders with servo systems allows for quick switching of bag length specifications, improving production change efficiency.

Material measurement and cutting control: liquid filling packaging, solid particle packaging equipment.

Function: The encoder monitors the operating cycles of the filling pump or screw measuring device, precisely controlling the amount of material filled (such as the capacity of beverage bottles or the weight of milk powder cans); in the cutting machine, the blade action is triggered based on the length signal feedback from the encoder, achieving precise cutting of packaging materials.

Labeling and coding positioning: label applicators, date coding equipment.

Function: The encoder detects the position of the product on the conveyor, triggering the label applicator or printer to operate accurately at the designated location (such as the body of the bottle or the side of the packaging bag), avoiding misalignment of the label or displacement of the print position.

Application in production line automation

Multi-station synchronous control: high-speed packaging production lines (such as biscuit packaging lines and confectionery production lines). Function: by using encoders to synchronise the movements of each station (printing, bag-making, filling, sealing, sorting), ensuring smooth transfer of materials between processes, and avoiding material accumulation or idling due to speed mismatches.

1.Fault detection and equipment monitoring: real-time monitoring system for the production line.

Function: The encoder feedback device monitors parameters such as the running speed and position of equipment. When anomalies occur (such as motor stalling or conveyor belt slipping), the system can promptly issue an alarm and shut down, reducing the defect rate and equipment wear.

2.Flexible production adaptation: switching to small-batch, multi-variety production.

Function: By linking the encoder with the PLC programme, device parameters can be quickly adjusted (such as printing pattern location and packaging size) without the need for mechanical hardware modifications, meeting personalised packaging requirements (such as customised labels and packaging boxes of different specifications).

Industry-specific requirements and key points for encoder selection.

Environmental adaptability, requirements: the food industry must meet hygiene standards (such as FDA, ISO 14644), and encoders must have dustproof, waterproof (IP65/IP67) and corrosion-resistant capabilities (to avoid damage from ink and cleaning agents). Selection: choose encoders with housings made of stainless steel or food-grade plastic, and in certain scenarios, a shaftless seal design should be adopted to reduce the accumulation of contaminants.

1. High precision and high response requirements: printing accuracy usually requires within ±0.1mm, and high-speed production lines (such as above 300 packages/minute) need encoders to have high resolution (such as above 10000 lines) and fast response capability. Technology: the use of absolute encoders can prevent loss of position after a power failure, ensuring accurate positioning for long-term operation.

2. Anti-jamming design: In printing equipment, inverters and motors are prone to electromagnetic interference, so encoders need to have shielding layers or differential signal outputs (such as RS422, SSI) to reduce signal distortion.

Typical application case

Case 1: Chocolate packaging production line - Encoders are used to control the length of the film feed, in conjunction with a visual inspection system, to ensure the brand logo's position on the chocolate boxes is accurate. Meanwhile, the encoder feedback adjusts the sealing temperature and pressure to ensure packaging integrity.

Case 2: Bottled beverage label printing machine - Incremental encoders are installed on the printing cylinder to monitor the printing phase in real time. When printing misalignment exceeds the threshold, the system automatically adjusts the plate position to ensure the graphics and text on the labels are clear and accurately aligned.6.

Summary: Encoders are core components in the food packaging and printing industry for achieving “precise control” and “efficient production.”Their roles encompass key aspects such as print alignment, packaging size control, and synchronisation of production lines. Through integration with servo systems, PLCs, and visual technologies, encoders not only enhance product quality consistency but also provide technological support for the industry's shift towards intelligent and flexible production.
